Technical Author

Canonical is building documentation capacity at scale. We have dozens of positions available across all teams and seniority levels, from Graduate to Senior Staff Technical Authors. **What You'll Do as a Technical Author:** - Lead documentation efforts for engineering teams, business operations, and beyond - Create, maintain, and improve software and business documentation - Work with team members to help them make effective documentation contributions - Influence product development as an expert user with important opinions - Engage with user communities to meet documentation needs - Encourage community contribution to documentation - Standardize structure, presentation, style, and language - Collaborate with documentation peers to advance documentation practice - Challenge and advance documentation understanding across the company **Document Roles We're Hiring For:** - Product-focused: Document products for end users - Customer-focused: Support complex deployments and integrations - Operations-focused: Internal documentation, employee handbooks, business communication **What We're Looking For:** - Excellent collaborator and communicator - Deep care for functional written communication - Technical writer with programmer's mindset, or programmer with excellent documentation record - Record of community engagement (open-source, documentation, research) - Sympathy for open-source challenges - Technical curiosity about software technology - Demonstrable documentation skills and enthusiasm - Software development context experience - Familiar with: Linux, command line, Git, Sphinx, reStructuredText - BSc/BA degree or equivalent - Able to travel twice yearly (up to 2 weeks) **Nice-to-Have:** - Deep technical domain knowledge - Open-source community leadership - UX/interaction/visual design experience **Why Canonical:** Remote since 2004. $2,000 annual learning budget, annual compensation review, recognition rewards, parental leave, EAP, global travel opportunities, Priority Pass for events.
