About the role

Canonical seeks a Software Engineer to join our Cloud Sustaining Engineering team. You'll work on critical issues in the open source stack, driving fixes upstream and maintaining Ubuntu's position as the leading Linux distribution for cloud infrastructure. **Your Impact:** - Resolve complex customer problems in Ubuntu, OpenStack, Kubernetes, and other open source software - Work across the entire stack: bare metal, virtualization (KVM), containerization (Docker/LXC), storage (Ceph), networking (OVS/OVN), and applications - Troubleshoot issues using gdb and system tools at any layer above the kernel - Develop fixes, backport patches, and work with upstream communities for inclusion - Maintain close partnerships with field, support, and product engineering teams - Review code and demonstrate strong technical judgment - Participate in improving processes, tools, and documentation **What You Bring:** - Professional software engineering experience - Computer Science, STEM, or similar background - Strong Linux expertise (kernel or userspace experience) - Development-level proficiency in Python, Go, C, or C++ on Linux - Ability to troubleshoot with system-level tools - Git source code repository experience - Strong academic track record - Willingness to travel up to 4 times yearly for company events **Nice-to-Have:** - Ubuntu Linux experience (kernel or userspace) - Kubernetes, OpenStack, Ceph expertise - Distributed systems knowledge
